Interior Minister’s office issues clarification on circulated news about prolonging polling period till after seven: Only if there are voters present in the polling station’s courtyard

NNA - Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Judge Bassam Mawlawi’s media office issued a statement this afternoon, in which it indicated that some social media sites are deliberating about the possibility of issuing a decision to extend the voting period beyond seven o’clock this evening, as was previously done in the 2018 general parliamentary elections.

The statement clarified herein that “Article 97 of the election law stipulates that the polling station chief must announce the conclusion of the polling process by seven o’clock in the evening, unless there are voters present in the polling center’s courtyard who have not yet cast their votes, at which point the period will be extended until they are able to vote.”

“This incident is referred to in the polling station’s report, and accordingly, the extension of voting period is restricted only to the event that there are voters present in the polling station’s courtyard,” the statement added.

It concluded by emphasizing that “there was no precedent decision, particularly in the 2018 parliamentary elections regarding the extension of the voting period, contrary to the provisions of Article 97 above.”
