Geagea warns against grave impact of Syrian refugee crisis on Lebanon

NNA - In a press conference held in Maarab on Friday, Lebanese Forces party leader, Samir Geagea, addressed the Syrian refugee crisis, emphasizing the economic strain it places on Lebanon and the potential loss of the nation's identity.

Geagea highlighted the fundamental issue, stating, "A nation cannot bear the burden of another, especially in Lebanon, where the economic situation is dire, risking the loss of our homeland."

Expressing concern over the existential threat faced by Lebanon, Geagea warned, "Every time Lebanese citizens emigrate, Syrian refugees arrive," underlining the need for sustainable solutions.

Regarding Lebanon's relationship with Syria, Geagea acknowledged the historical bond with the Syrian people but criticized the ongoing strained relationship with the Syrian regime, stressing that his remarks are not driven by animosity but by principles.

"If one is not vigilant about their country, they might end up a refugee in their own land," Geagea said, highlighting that 40% of Syrian refugees in Lebanon are undocumented, citing international examples to support his argument.

He projected a prolonged Syrian crisis, potentially leading to a surge in refugees by 2030, equivalent to the Lebanese population, pushing for proactive measures to safeguard Lebanon's sovereignty.

Geagea further clarified Lebanon's legal stance, stating it is a transit country, with the majority of Syrians residing illegally according to international law, except for 300,000 with residency permits.

Emphasizing Lebanon's sovereign decision-making, the LF chief asserted the need to prioritize national interests over international expectations, a stance upheld by successive governments since the Syrian conflict began.

Geagea also highlighted the legal provisions allowing deportation of undocumented individuals, stressing that such decisions do not require judicial approval, asserting, "The solution lies within us, not the European Union."

Geagea went on to underscore the complexity of the issue, noting that 200,000 Syrian refugees are armed, placing additional strain on Lebanon's security apparatus.

Geagea finally assigned political responsibility for managing the refugee crisis to the Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, and Minister of Defense, urging strict enforcement of regulations, with the Lebanese General Security bearing primary responsibility, supported by the Internal Security Forces and Lebanese Army.
