NNA - Maronite Patriarch Mar Beshara Botrous Rahi told his Russian hosts that the Maronites desire to strengthen its church presence in Russia and contribute in the establishment of peace and stability in the Middle East.
Rahi made these remarks following his meeting with Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill in Moscow.
Both sides discussed ways to enhance ties between the two churches and reviewed common interest and challenges facing the churches in the Middle East.
Rahi conveyed the greetings of the President of the Republic Michel Sleiman and Cardinal Sfeir.
The Patriarch underlined the importance of cementing the Christians in Lebanon, Syria and the Middle East in their countries and to hold on to their faith.
He reminded that the presence of the Christians in the Middle East dates back to the birth of Jesus Christ.
Rahi and Kirill both shared the view that the fast developments and changes in the Middle East have to some extent threatened the existence of the Christians in this region.
The Patriarch added that the Christians in Lebanon and the Middle East are still keen to preserve the best relations with the Muslims.
