Future: We cling to holding parliamentary elections on set date

NNA - "Future" Bloc voiced adherence to holding upcoming parliamentary elections as scheduled, without any amendment or delay.

"Future" Bloc's fresh stance came in the context of its weekly regular meeting Tuesday afternoon at Beit al-Wasat, presided over by former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora.

The Bloc broached the current situation in Lebanon and the region.

The Bloc categorically rejected the so-called Orthodox Gathering electoral proposal, saying such a law anchors extremism and narrow-mindedness and transforms Lebanon into a land dominated by sectarian conflicts, instead of being the symbol of moderation and message of national coexistence in the Arab nation and the world.

The bloc regarded the adoption of proportionality in the parliamentary elections, in parallel with the growing influence of organized illegitimate arms, especially in the areas of influence by Hezbollah in the south, the Bekaa and the southern suburbs, as "useless."

Future Bloc declared that it shall boycott any parliamentary or political meeting or function if Cabinet members attend. The Bloc called for the formation of a rescue government to spare the country further tension at the current stage.

The meeting took up the ideas included in the comprehensive electoral initiative to be announced by former Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, upcoming Thursday, which promotes moderation and combats all sorts of extremism. Conferees affirmed openness on the various ideas or concepts proposed for an electoral law that would conform to the Taef Accord, constitutional respect and national coexistence formula.

Turning to recent Roumieh incidents, the Bloc said what happened is utterly rejected and deplored, holding the government full responsibility in this regard. The Bloc called on the government to swiftly accomplish and implement requisite reform measures at said jail and other remaining prisons.
