NNA - The Supreme Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI, on Monday received Palestine's Mahmoud Abbas at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, as reported by the Vatican radio.
Following the meeting, Pope Benedict XVI reiterated support to establishing an independent Palestine.
"The Apostolic seat supports the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state on the land of your ancestors, in peace with its neighbors as per the internationally recognized borders," the Pope said addressing the delegation Mahmoud Abbas was heading.
As for his part, Abbas uttered stern condemnation to the Israeli occupation.
"Time has come for the Palestinian people's suffering to end," he said.
