NNA - Minister of Environment Nazem Khoury confirmed that the visit of Maronite Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros Rai to Syria does not have any political interpretation, pointing out that the visit was purely religious and was not to support a certain political party.
Khoury said in a statement on Tuesday that the visit was necessary to eliminate the Christians' concerns in the region and to assure that all Christians' spiritual leaderships show solidarity with each other to preserve the Christian community in the Middle East.
The Minister pointed out that the President of the Republic Michel Suleiman supported the visit.
Separately, Khoury said that the resignation of the Pope was not expected at all, stressing that this increases their admiration of him.
He added that the Pope is the Fourth in the church's history who has resigned; pointing out that it is difficult for people to take such a step when they reach such positions.
