Kanaan: constriction gave us 64 MPs

NNA - Change and Reform parliamentary bloc member Ibrahim Kanaan reiterated the bloc's commitment to the Orthodox election proposal and reminded the critics of this bill that the Lebanese constitution gave the Christians 64 MPs in the parliament.

Speaking to NBN TV station, Kanaan said the Christians in Lebanon never felt that they have true representatives in the parliament because of the unjust electoral laws over the past 20 years.

"We consider ourselves living in exile because the true partnership in the country is missing. It is our rights to have an ambition and adopt a position which suits our interest," the MP said.

He added that there is a charter and constitution which talks about equal and true power sharing.

"We are committed to the Orthodox plan since it gave us 64 MPs and we won't accept anything less."

Kanaan accused Future movement of injecting the sectarian feelings and for this reason it rejects the Orthodox plan.

The MP argued that those who are elected by their religious sects can take effective steps to develop the advance the system.

He suggested that his bloc accepted reluctantly the extension of the subcommittee meetings for another 15 days to give all the blocs another chance to come up with a new proposal that would satisfy all parties.

Kanaan hopes that the parliament would convene on February 18 to vote on the election laws.

The MP said he was surprised by the president's refusal of the Orthodox proposal, claiming that the president's justifications were not convincing.

Kanaan appealed to Future movement to reconsider its position from the Orthodox plan and to acknowledge that some sects are not being treated fairly.

He added that holding the elections on time depends on the developments that will take place.
