NNA - The Appeals Chamber of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon ("STL") issued a scheduling order for the pronouncement of the Sentencing Judgment in the case of Prosecutor v. Merhi and Oneissi (STL-11-01) in a public session on 16 June 2022 at 14:00 CET.
The hearing will be broadcast live on the STL Website and can be followed in Arabic, English, and French. Also, it will be held virtually and there will be no accreditation for the public gallery or the media centre.
On 18 August 2020, the Trial Chamber pronounced its Judgment in the Ayyash et al. case and unanimously found Mr Salim Jamil Ayyash guilty beyond reasonable doubt of all counts charged against him in the amended consolidated indictment. The Trial Chamber further found Messrs Hassan Habib Merhi, Hussein Hassan Oneissi, and Assad Hassan Sabra not guilty of all counts charged against them. The Prosecution filed an appeal against the Judgment of the Trial Chamber in the case of Prosecutor v. Merhi and Oneissi, Case No. STL-11-01 (formerly, Prosecutor v. Ayyash et al.).
On 10 March 2022, the Appeals Chamber issued its Appeal Judgment and unanimously found Messrs Merhi and Oneissi guilty beyond reasonable doubt of all counts charged against them in the amended consolidated indictment. On the same day, the Appeals Chamber issued a scheduling order for submissions on sentencing. Pursuant to the scheduling order, the Prosecution, the LRV, Counsel for Mr Merhi, and Counsel for Mr Oneissi filed written submissions on sentencing.
Under Rule 171 (E) of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon's Rules of Procedure and Evidence, the Sentencing Judgment shall be pronounced in public on a date of which notice shall be given to the Parties and the victims participating in the proceedings. Pursuant to this Rule, the Appeals Chamber has scheduled the pronouncement of the Sentencing Judgment for 16 June 2022.
