UNIFIL SW and LAF together for recovery: Tangible support for families and small businesses north of the Blue Line

NNA  – In line with its mandate, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) continues to actively support the redeployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) throughout its area of operations, with the aim of strengthening stability and security for the benefit of the local population. This joint commitment seeks to create and maintain a Safe and Secure Environment (SASE), not only for peacekeepers but also for the civilian communities living north and along the Blue Line.

Over the past week, UNIFIL’s Sector West (SW), in close coordination with the LAF, has carried out multiple ground operations to support affected families, facilitate the resumption of economic activities, and accompany the LAF in missions essential to the wellbeing of the population. Below is a summary of the main activities:

•    Debris removal in Tayr Harfa: UNIFIL assisted the LAF in clearing the rubble of two destroyed homes.
•    Logistical support in Aita al Shaab: The LAF, with UNIFIL’s assistance, transported equipment from a local poultry farm to Sour, helping restart production activities.
•    Reconstruction in Yaroun: UNIFIL accompanied the LAF during debris removal and clearing operations at a livestock facility, aiding economic recovery in the area.
•    Support to agricultural activities in Salhani-Ramyah: Joint UNIFIL-LAF patrols assisted ongoing farming work such as plowing, land clearing, and cultivation, enabling local farmers to work safely.
•    Water pipe installation in Risha: UNIFIL responded to an LAF request to install a water pipe between the tank of a destroyed house and an army pond, improving water access for local communities.
•    Construction supervision in Boustan: The Ghanaian contingent ensured site security during the supervision of a reconstruction project, guaranteeing safe movement for civilian personnel.
•    Intervention in Umm At Tut: The LAF, supported by UNIFIL patrols, carried out debris removal and dug a septic tank to improve sanitary conditions in the area.
•    Agricultural escort in Salhani and Ramyah: UNIFIL supported the LAF in ensuring the safety of local farmers during field activities. A small-scale farmer publicly thanked UNIFIL for the crucial support provided.
•    Damage assessment in Aita al Shaab school: UNIFIL assisted the LAF in documenting damage to a vandalized and destroyed school, providing security during the inspection.
•    Debris removal in Tayr Harfa: The Italian contingent accompanied the LAF throughout the clearance operation, ensuring the site’s safety.

These efforts reflect the ongoing commitment of UNIFIL SW and the Lebanese Armed Forces to improving the living conditions of the local population and contributing to regional stability. Working side by side, UNIFIL and the LAF reaffirm their central role in implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 and in strengthening trust among communities.
