Joint press release on the MIKTA Brown Bag Seminar on UN PKO

NNA - The Embassies of MIKTA countries (Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Türkiye and Australia) to Lebanon held a Brown Bag Seminar to emphasize the importance of UN Peacekeeping Operations (PKO) on 6 December 2022 at Hilton Beirut Habtoor, Lebanon, with the participation of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), UN Country Team, Lebanese Armed Forces, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of Lebanon and representatives of embassies in Beirut.

At the event, Mr. Jack Christofides, Deputy Head of Mission of the UNIFIL, provided briefings to the participants on the UNIFIL’s activities including its Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) experience. The Ambassadors of the MIKTA countries and representatives commended the UNIFIL’s contribution to Lebanon and exchanged views on how to contribute to strengthening Humanitarian Assistance-Development-Peace (HDP) Nexus through assisting UN PKO’s efforts in Lebanon. The Ambassadors reiterated MIKTA’s commitment to Lebanon’s peace, security and sovereignty.

This seminar follows a coming together of MIKTA leaders on 15 November 2022 on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, Bali, Indonesia. The five leaders reiterated their commitment to international peace and stability and their willingness to continue to play a constructive role on the global stage.

MIKTA – a grouping of Mexico, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Türkiye and Australia – was established as a cross-regional grouping of G20 member nations in 2013, with the idea of bridging divides between developed and developing nations and building consensus on issues of relevance to all regions.
