President Aoun meets UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, condemns any aggression against UN forces operating in the south

NNA - President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, received United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Ambassador Joanna Wronecka, today at the Presidential Palace. 

The President informed Ambassador Wronecka that “Lebanon condemns any aggression against international forces operating in the south”, stating that an investigation has started concerning the incident which occurred at Ramieh border town, to determine responsibilities.

President Aoun also asserted the importance of coordination between the Lebanese Army and UNIFIL, to avoid the recurrence of such incidents.

In addition, the President emphasized Lebanon’s readiness to resume South border-demarcation negotiations, in a way which preserves Lebanese rights and sovereignty of the state. President Aoun indicated that the resumption of Cabinet sessions restores the work of the executive authority back to normal, according to the powers specified in the constitution.

Moreover, the President pointed out that budget approval will achieve financial order and help in Lebanese-IMF negotiations, to study the economic-financial recovery plan which was set by the Cabinet.

In parallel, President Aoun reiterated his commitment to hold parliamentary elections on date, next May, especially since logistical preparations are taking place and the required financial appropriations are ready.

Responding to Ambassador Wronecka’s clarification, President Aoun asserted that “Lebanon welcomes the Kuwaiti initiative which aims at restoring confidence between Lebanon and Arab states in general, Gulf States in particular, especially since the brotherly Kingdom of Kuwait has always been on the side of Lebanon and provided support in various circumstances”.

“Lebanon’s answer will be conveyed by the Lebanese Foreign Affairs Minister, to the Arab Ministerial Meeting, which will be held in Kuwait at the end of this week” President Aoun concluded.

For her part, Ambassador Wronecka had conveyed, to the President, the UN position on Lebanese developments. Ambassador Wronecka also stated that the Security Council will hold a session next March on Lebanon, and during this session Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres will present a report on the Lebanese situation and recently recorded positive indicators.

Family of Late Artist Jardaq:

President Aoun met a delegation from the family of late artist, Halim Jardaq, accompanied by Head of the Association of Artists for Painting and Sculpture, Michel Rouhana, Administrative Board member, Joseph Faloughi and Plastic Artist, Ibrahim Zod.

The delegation thanked the President for awarding Late Jardaq a high medal of appreciation for his artistic and cultural work.

For his side, President Aoun praised the late artist, who was one of the pioneers of modern plastic art, a scholar of culture and a contributor in his artistic and cultural production to the renaissance of plastic art in Lebanon and the world. -- Presidency Press Office
