Mawlawi represents Mikati at the launching of ‘Forsa Center’ for the rehabilitation of drug addicts: We adopt any initiative undertaken by specialized associations in various regions

NNA – "Umm Al-Nour" and the "Al-Manhaj" Charitable Association, under the patronage of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, represented by the Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi, launched their joint project in Tripoli, the "Forsa" center for the prevention and rehabilitation of drug addicts, in the conference hall of the Rashid Karami International Fair in Tripoli, in the presence of Social Affairs Minister Hector Hajjar, Nicolas Khoury representing Education Minister Abbas al-Halabi, Papal Ambassador Monsignor Joseph Spitery, and Advisor to the President of the Republic, former Minister Jean Raffoul, among other prominent dignitaries and senior officials.

“This is the first humanitarian project in Tripoli and the North, which is a joint endeavor by Al-Manhaj Charitable Society and Umm Al-Nour Gathering in our beloved city - Tripoli, in order to rehabilitate drug addicts. As I convey to you the apology of His Excellency PM Najib Mikati for not attending due to prior commitments, I confirm his determination to support every step that comes within the framework of strengthening the immunity and security of our Tripolitan society. It is a benevolent and courageous initiative, in light of the spread of this scourge in our society among our young men and women, and it comes in the context of advanced humanitarian work,” Mawlawi said in his word during the launching event.

"The high rates of drug addiction by a large segment of the Lebanese youth have rendered us in a state of permanent mobilization, signaling the alarm, due to their negative impact on society in its foundation, development and growth. We have tightened procedures at crossing points, even at the land borders, the ports and Rafic Hariri International Airport, and we are working to fully control the ports in cooperation with the General Directorate of Customs,” Mawlawi said.

He added: “Despite the harsh conditions the security apparatuses are going through, whether at the material or moral level, they have succeeded in arresting top dealers and promoters, and confiscating tons of drugs, with daily and diligent follow-up on my part. Yet, the reality shows the persistence of high levels of addiction in Lebanon for several reasons, including poor awareness and guidance, lack of home follow-up and difficult financial conditions.”

Mawlawi continued to indicate that “the Information Division and the Anti-Narcotics Office of the General Directorate of the Internal Security Forces have worked to follow-up on the implementation of the plans laid out professionally, and the daily follow-ups, day and night, have resulted in major achievements in this field by breaking into the promotion dens that are located in most of the poor areas.”

“The role of the Lebanese army in this field cannot be overlooked, especially in the raids on Captagon laboratories,” Mawlawi asserted.

The Interior Minister emphasized that the most important treatment for this scourge is the process of education and awareness in society, hence the need for holding workshops and seminars, in addition to sending specialized trained persons to schools and universities in order to immunize students against falling into the trap of drug dealers, which is what the ISF General Directorate has been doing continuously. “It is worth noting that ‘Forsa’ center offers a range of programs according to advanced health and treatment standards, starting with the recovery of the addict and going through internal and external rehabilitation, and following-up on the recovered addict after treatment,” he said.

“We, in the Lebanese government, as per the directives of the Prime Minister, are always quick to adopt any initiative undertaken by specialized associations and institutions in various Lebanese regions to treat addicts and reintegrate them into society,” Mawlawi reassured.
