(UPDATE) UN Special Coordinator briefs Aoun on deliberations of Security Council Resolution 1701

NNA - President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, met United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Mrs. Joanna Wronecka, today at the Presidential Palace.

The President told Mrs. Wronecka that all preparations are in place to hold the parliamentary elections, next spring. “Therefore, there is no need to worry or take rumors into account”.

“Any attempt to interfere in these elections by external parties to influence voters will be faced by force, especially since there are parties, organizations, and associations trying to exploit the difficult living and economic conditions which the country is passing through, to pressure voters in favor of specific political trends and personalities” the President stressed.

In addition, President Aoun pointed out that contacts are ongoing to overcome obstacles to the return of the Cabinet to reconvening, and reiterated the inadmissibility of politicians interfering with the work of the judiciary, especially in ongoing investigations of the Beirut Port explosion crime.

President Aoun also reiterated the need to respect the principle of separation of powers, which is stipulated in the constitutions, renewing Lebanon’s commitment to international resolutions, especially Resolution 1701.

Moreover, the President asserted the importance of the existing cooperation between the Lebanese Army in the south and UNIFIL forces, “For the interest of stability and security in the region”.

Finally, President Aoun welcomed the visit planned by UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and stated that preparations are underway to prepare the visit program in coordination with the UN Secretariat in New York.

For her part, Mrs. Wronecka had briefed President Aoun on the deliberations which accompanied the regular briefing of the UN Security Council on Resolution 1701, which took place at the end of last November. Mrs. Wronecka also briefed the President on the stances issued by member states regarding the implementation of Resolution 1701, and addressed current political, economic and living conditions, in Lebanon.—Presidency Press Office
