President Aoun: We are keen on the best relations with the Gulf; Lebanon still remains a safe country; Parliament will decide who will have the authority to try Presidents, MP’s, Cabinet Ministers

NNA - President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, affirmed that the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is keen on supporting Lebanon and helping it out of its crises, commending the outcome of his fruitful talks with Sheikh Tamim and his visit to Doha, and pointing out that “Qatar is the only country that provided all kinds of support to Lebanon with nothing in return.”

Aoun went on to indicate that "the date of the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar to Lebanon has not been set yet, but it will be full of political, economic and investment dossiers," stressing that "all facilities and infrastructure projects in Lebanon are available to Qatari investors."

He hoped that "the diplomatic cloud with the Gulf countries will clear up through dialogue and mutual respect," emphasizing "Lebanon's keenness on the best relations with the Gulf countries."

President Aoun aslo affirmed that "the Lebanese parliamentary elections will be held on time under the supervision of international organizations," explaining that his words regarding the extension of his term were misunderstood.

Addressing the Lebanese, the President called on the political forces to advocate a word of solidarity, "in which we save our homeland and restore dignity to the people," reassuring everyone that "there is no return to wars in Lebanon."

With regards to people’s deposits in banks, Aoun referred to studying the distribution of losses between the Lebanese state, banks and depositors, with his keenness not to burden depositors with more losses. He said: “The adoption of the Capital Control Law in Parliament is a step to solve the deposits problem.”

He stressed herein that "the forensic audit of the accounts of the Central Bank, which is being conducted for the first time in the history of Lebanon, will end with the identification of defects and responsibilities, and that no official convicted in the forensic investigation will be excluded."

Over the controversy regarding the powers of the judicial investigator into the explosion of the port of Beirut, Aoun said this can be resolved in the Parliament Council which will hold a plenary session to decide who will have the authority to try presidents, parliament representatives and cabinet ministers, and this will lead to solving the governmental crisis that has disrupted the cabinet's meetings.

Touching on the demarcation issue of the southern maritime border between Lebanon and Israel, the President indicated that this matter awaits what the American side will bear in terms of Israel’s response to Lebanon's conditions for demarcating the maritime border. He underlined that "the Lebanese rights to the oil wealth in the Mediterranean will not be abandoned or undermined," noting that "the extraction of the Lebanese oil wealth is linked to regional political developments," and expressing his desire to benefit from the Qatari experience in the field of oil exploration and gas extraction.

President Aoun’s stances came during an interview with the Qatari newspaper, "Al-Sharq", on the occasion of his visit to Doha, during which he confirmed that Qatar is a permanent friend of Lebanon and that the visit was an occasion to strengthen both countries' bilateral relations.

Aoun reiterated that his talks with the Emir of Qatar were fruitful and significant, as they included a review of the developments of the situation in Lebanon and the region, especially that Lebanon is affected by what is happening in the Arab and Gulf environments, noting that he briefed Sheikh Tamim during their meeting on the reality of Lebanon's developments, whereby the Qatari Prince expressed his interest in helping Lebanon to get out of its crises and restore stability to its territory.
