Fares: SSNP supports proportional representation

NNA - Member of the SSNP, Marwan Fares, said Sunday that his party proposed a draft electoral law based on proportional representation, single constituency and away from denominational restrictions.

During an interview today with Voice of Lebanon radio, the MP revealed that electoral projects under discussion, including the Orthodox plan and small electoral districts take back Lebanon to the era of division and fragmentation.

Fares stressed the necessity of holding parliamentary elections on schedule, according to a new electoral law, different from that of 1960.

He argued that proportional law ensures the best representation for Lebanese parties.

Fares confirmed his party was not in concord with some components of March 8 Camp with regards to the electoral law, referring in particular to FPM and Hezbollah.

Concerning the incident in Arsal, the MP asserted that the Lebanese army was able to restore calm in the village, where some wanted to establish a buffer zone on the Lebanese-Syrian border.

Fares said that the army was the only guarantee for the country, calling for an investigation to identify Arsal culprits.
