Berri in letters to parliaments' heads: For firm position regarding Israeli terrorism

NNA - Speaker of the House, Nabih Berri, called on heads of parliaments to take a clear, firm position rejecting Israeli hostility and Israel's official terrorism, manifested in its air assault on Syria that targeted one of its facilities.

Speaker Berri's fresh stance came in letters addressed Tuesday to heads of parliaments, namely Head of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, International Parliamentary Union, European Parliament Head, Head of the Parliamentary Mediterranean Organization, Secretary-General of the Francophone Parliaments, Secretary General of the Organization of Asian Parliaments, and the Secretary General of the Union of Councils of Islamic Conference Organization.

Berri called in his letter for "solidarity with Syria and bracing current endeavors to make and build its stability and maintain the integrity of its land, people and institutions."

Berri considered the recent Israeli air assault on Syria that targeted one of its facilities, as a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of a member state at the UN and the various parliamentary unions.

"This aggression at this particular time constitutes an additional Israeli attempt to destabilize Syria, and an attempt to impede the current international and regional political efforts- with a high pace- to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis," Berri said in his letter.

Berri underlined that Israeli pretexts given for such an aggression are completely untrue.

"These pretexts are in all cases unacceptable... No one can legalize aggression under the pretext of Israeli security requirements and continue to accept international double standards that make Israel a state above international law," Berri said.

On the other hand, Berri met at noon today with a German delegation, including a number of MPs, former ministers and heads of regional offices of German Civil donor organizations, in the presence of the German Ambassador.

Talks reportedly dwelt on the current developments in Lebanon and the region.

Berri met this afternoon with Finance Minister, Mohammed Safadi, where they broached the general situation and forthcoming poll law.

Among Speaker Berri's itinerant visitors for today has been Kazakhstan Ambassador to Lebanon where they boarded bilateral relations.
