Saudi FM says Security Council must interfere as Syria's Arabs 'in trouble'

NNA - Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Saoud Al-Faisal, said Tuesday that the Syrian government was refusing any solution and that the Arabs in Syria were "in big trouble," renewing calls upon the international Security Council to interfere.

"Unfortunately, the Syrian tragedy lies within the presence of a government that refuses any solution. They still think that anyone who fights them is a terrorist. It is unlikely to reach a political solution," he told a news conference following the closure of an Arab Summit on Socio-Economic Development in Riyadh today.

"What are we expected to do to win the battle? The situation is very bad in Syria. Damascus, the most ancient city, turned into a shelling spot. How are we supposed to reach a political solution with someone who does this to his sons and history," he wondered, in reference to Syrian President, Bashar Assad.

"The United Nations is now in front of a major duty in this case," he stressed.

"We call upon the Security Council to assume its responsibility based on the trust we bestowed upon it. Otherwise, I believe it is the obligation of the General Assembly to do what it takes," he concluded.
