Siniora says Mikati's proposal on government change not groundbreaking

NNA - MP Fouad Siniora said Friday the proposal of Prime Minister Najib Mikati on forming a new government to oversee the next polls as soon as an electoral law is agreed, did not break new ground.

He said such a suggestion did not bring any change to the current stagnation, but instead, it imposed new conditions, mirroring the intentions of some parties to complicate the prevailing juncture.

On the fresh security events that jolted the northern city of Tripoli, Siniora hailed the wide deployment of the Lebanese Army therein.

But he did not fail to cast doubts over Mikati's recent statement hereby saying that there would have been an emirate in Tripoli, had it not been for the army deployment.

"Is he [Mikati] trying to justify the Syrian position as per which Tripoli is the haven of hardliners and extremists?" he wondered.

"Or is he trying to prove to some European states that he is the one fighting extremists?" he added.

"It is about time to tighten security in Tripoli," he stressed.

Siniora made these remarks during a press conference he held at his office in the Sidon town of Hilaliyah.
