Gemayel meets Berri, rebuffs elections delay

NNA - Kataeb Party Leader, Amine Gemayel, launched a fresh tirade on Friday against any scenario leading to a delay in the 2013 legislative elections.

Gemayel's stance came following a visit to House Speaker, Nabih Berri, where the pair had engaged in most recent developments at the local and regional scenes.

"We are totally against delaying parliamentary elections, no matter what the reasons or period might be," said Gemayel, fearing months of delay would extend to countless years. He cited the example of the 1972 elections law, which winded up blocking the Parliament's activities for 20 years.

Gemayel also voiced utter rejection of a return to the 1960's electoral law, as some political parties have been hinting.

"It neither ensures fair representation, nor genuine partnership," he said, clamoring for a swift Parliamentary meeting to come up with a fair and democratic electoral law.

"We are more than willing to surpass all hindrances, in return for a new electoral law that fulfills the people's aspirations," he said.

Moreover, the Kataeb Party leader described his meeting with Berri as very positive.

"We agreed over many common denominators. What remains is pursuing contacts to reach mutual agreement over new laws," said Gemayel, who also hoped that this would save the nation from its dire status quo.

On another level, Berri met earlier during the day with Agriculture Minister Hussein Hajj Hassan, who handed him a shield of appreciation from the Agriculture Ministry, in appreciation of the Speaker's continued support to said sector.
